Walt Disney: One Man's Dream Virtual Tour

Sunday, May 30, 2010
December 15, 1966 - Walter Elias Disney passes away

Almost spiritually, a phenomenon occurred at Walt's park that evening. That was the night that the Christmas Parade stepped off for the first time. Don Payne, a former cast member said: "we were standing back behind where Walt's apartment was and it started snowing! In the work lights, you could see flakes of snow drifting down. They never hit the ground, but we were all looking, thinking, 'How freaky is this? It doesn't snow in Anaheim!' It was cold and it was snowing."

Walt Disney: One Man's Dream, in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, is a multimedia gallery attraction with 400-plus artifacts where you can take a self-guided tour through the exhibits of photographs, audio interviews and memorabilia that tell the story of Walt Disney.

Today, my tribute is this Virtual Tour through the One Man's Dream.

Over the years, D23's Scott Wolf has spoken to many Cast Members who were with the Company at that time. They all remember that day vividly. Disney Legend X Atencio remembered: "December 15 was traditionally when I bought my Christmas tree. When I got home here and got to thinking about it and sat, I just bawled my eyes out." Disney Legend Harriet Burns remembered that as soon as she heard the news, "tears squirted out of my eyes… we knew he had gone back to St. Joseph's Hospital but he had been there back and forth from time to time and had little things done. This was only 10 days after he'd been in for a meeting."

Connie Swanson Lane, who was the Disneyland Ambassador at the time, recalled: "It was like losing a family member. Very difficult. Most of us stayed at work because that's what Walt would have wanted us to do. The flag was lowered at half mast. It was very, very hard, and I stood at Town Square for the retreat that night until the flag was totally lowered. It was my way of saying goodbye."

Decorating the Paris Apartment

Disneyland Brazil MAY BE a reality in less than 10 years

Tuesday, May 25, 2010
To avoid breaking the hotel network in Rio de Janeiro after the "fever" caused by the Olympics in 2016, a group of economists from BNDES (National Economic and Social Development) and an advisor to the mayor of the capital will present the idea of create a Disney theme park in the city during the 22nd edition of the National Forum.

The project was presented at the event, which took place last Thursday (20),  at the BNDES in Rio.

According to one of the authors, the economist Fabio Giambiagi, also menthor of 'market risk' at BNDES, the official article has 35 pages about the Olympics and its legacy, and two entire pages defending the idea of the Disney theme park.

- We cannot have the Olympics and leave the city without a goal after that. Following this event the city has to reinvent itself. A great example is Barcelona, where the Olympics were held in 1992.

Giambiagi said that the Rio hotel network must improve quality and increase the amount of beds for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. To be able to survive after that, the city needs to be able to attract tourists on a larger scale. For this, an investment like a Disney theme park would be the best choice .

The economist argues that it can be done because Disney is experiencing a trend of expansion.  In addition to parks in the U.S., there’s also Disney Parks in Europe and its last installation outside the American continent was in Asia.

- Hopefully in ten years, Disney will put its foot in Latin America and will not be in Mexico because it has no meaning because of the proximity to the USA. A natural choice would be Brazil especially with the growing economy.

According to Giambiagi, there won’t be a place with such suitable conditions to overcome Rio de Janeiro, with potential for tourism and attracting people from all over Brazil and South America.

-It’s very hard for a person who lives in Argentina to go to Miami. But if there is an air conection to Rio de Janeiro, it is possible that people can come to Disney two or three times in their lives.

Giambiagi made it clear that the idea of creating the theme park is a project that is still in development aprocess and that there are no negotiations with Disney yet.

It was said because of the recent rumors about a large Disney World for 2011 in the south of Brazil.
The false statement says construction is scheduled for August 2011 and has duration of five years.

The blogger slanderer even invents the area as the "DisneyLand Brazil” would be built about 25 km ², kept secret that also rely on its complex to DisneyArea 'city' to house all the developments in media of the famous American group through the creation of The Brazil Walt Disney Company, an independent arm of Disney Latin America. "

On Tuesday (May 23), A Disney’s spokesperson denied all the information related to the Construction of the theme park and also said the company does not plan any investment in Brazil. The office will issue an official statement next week.

Thanks to Leandro Solari from Argentina for all the work and colaboration!

May 21, 2010

It's that time of year again! Star Wars™ Weekends 2010 officially starts today at Disney's Hollywood Studios™. The theme of this year's event pays tribute to the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. We still recall seeing the film on opening day exactly 30 years ago today.

We have created a collection of Disney Pins for the event this year. You may recall first reading about them on the Disney Parks Blog back in April. We also created an event page featuring this year's collection on DisneyPins.com.

In honor of the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, we thought we'd offer a behind the scenes look at the evolution of the Disney Vacation Club Member exclusive pin. You may recall this image was once in the running for the main logo for Star Wars™ Weekends 2010. This year is the first time we have ever offered a Disney Vacation Club Member Exclusive pin.

First Logo

This was one of the first attempts at creating artwork featuring the Wampa and Tauntauns. You'll notice that Luke Skywalker and Han Solo were featured in this original concept.

Adding Character

Disney artist Garrett Webb revised the early concept and added Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. He also added the Star Wars™ Weekends 2010 logo. This was Garrett's rough pencil sketch.

Clean Up

The rough concept that Garrett created was then cleaned up.

Final Artwork

This became the final artwork for the pin complete with color fills.

The Final Pin

The final pin that will be sold only to Disney Vacation Club Members who present a valid DVC Membership ID. This pin won't be available via mail order; it will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis at Disney's Hollywood Studios™.

One final note. We can't decide. Do you have a favorite from the image below?
